When Blockfest was created back in 2008, hip hop culture was not dominant in Finland: no radio stations played hip hop music and no major music festivals booked such artists. Blockfest wanted to change this.
Over the years, Blockfest has played a pivotal role in the rise of Finnish hip hop culture. Both the genre and the festival itself have evolved from underground to more mainstream. Blockfest has been nominated as Festival of the Year at the Industry Awards Gala six times and a record total of 80.000 people attended the music festival and other Blockfest events in 2022.
Artists who have taken the Blockfest stage over the years include 50 Cent, Playboi Carti, Metro Boomin, Akon, Lil Uzi Vert, Jack Harlow, D-Block Europe, Lil Tjay, Wu-Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Nas, A$AP Rocky, Wiz Khalifa, Post Malone, $uicideboy$, Migos, Lil Wayne, G-Eazy, Juice WRLD, Mobb Deep, Jaden Smith, Ferg, Big Sean, Tyga, T.I, Young Thug, Rick Ross, Ty Dolla $ign, Skepta, Bun B, Clipse, Tory Lanez, Talib Kweli and Mac Miller, Destroy Lonely, Ken Carson.
